My ServicesAll of my services are meant to ensure your writing is kind to the reader -- meaning it's clear and free of errors, and inclusive.
Editing ServicesI edit plain-language documents, academic writing about literature, creative nonfiction, poetry, and fiction (especially genre fiction).
Structural EditingThis involves moving paragraphs and chapters, adding scenes and information, and removing sections that do not help your readers.
Stylistic EditingThis involves changing words and sentence structure to create a reading level appropriate for your readers, while ensuring voice and tone have maximum impact.
Copy EditingThis involves grammar and spelling, but also consistency -- making sure words are from the same region (ex: color vs colour) and numbers are treated the same way (a quarter vs 1/4).
ProofreadingThis involves the final version of a manuscript ready to be printed, and making sure everything is included and properly formatted (ex: page number on the left, no letters transposed or left out).
Sensitivity ReadingThis involves ensuring all language is inclusive and sensitive, such as by ensuring underrepresented people are not shown in stereotypical roles or described with out-of-date language.
Other ServicesContent CreationI can research and write, or rewrite based on information you provide me, plain language documents such as posters, brochures, or articles.
Web ServicesIn addition to creating and editing web content, I can advise you on web specific concerns such as Search Engine Optimization, F-scanning, and website accessibility.
Fact CheckingI can check facts and review source documentation to help make sure your document meets industry standards, and does not accidentally plagiarize or infringe the copyright of another work.

What's it like to work with me? |
Imagine for a moment you're on an epic quest....
Maybe your cause is to save the prince from his evil stepfather, or to avenge the death of your father at the hands of a six-fingered man, or good old-fashioned to save the world. Whatever the case, you're nearing the end of your journey when you are stopped by a sphinx, or a two-headed statue, or a strange creature who lives under a mountain with its precious. In order to continue, you must answer a riddle. If you fail, you shall surely perish. You agree, and are asked the following: In a restricted clause, would it be better to use which or that?* Do you answer:
|
If you answered depends, you would be correct. This is because language is constantly changing. For instance, we don't use thou when talking about a single person, unless we're reading Shakespeare. But we do use they.
Language is an ever evolving beast, and a difficult riddle. Sometimes we all need a wise wizard to help us with it while on our quest.
That's where I come in.

I worked with Nora on a 100k novel and found her to be a joy to work with. I was really happy with the edits I received, and felt as though she really helped me push off into the right direction. I'd recommend Nora to anyone who is getting started with writing. --- Eve T.
Billing Q&A
How do you bill?
I bill by the project. That means you and I agree beforehand what will be done and how much it will cost. Or, to use the epic quest analogy from before, we agree if I'll guide you over the next hill, the next mountain, or until your quest is complete.
I accept payments through Interac e-Transfer.

How much will it cost?
Good question. The answer will depend on how long your document is and which services you want completed, because these things take different amounts of time. For instance, a sensitivity reading focusing on one character in a novel will take less time than a combined structural, stylistic, and copy edit of a textbook.
To get a rough estimate of how much your project might cost, consider how long it would take you to read over each page you want edited. The rule of thumb for this suggests that it takes about an hour to edit six pages. Add on time for additional services, rounds of editing, and meetings. Multiply this number by thirty for a rough price.

How long will it take?
You don't need to be a wizard to guess my answer: It depends. Some edits may only require a few hours, others may require a month or more. After considering how many hours it will take to complete each round of revisions and all meetings, you and I will set a due date -- or series of due dates -- that works for us both.
What if I want more work done?
Don't worry, I won't disappear in a puff of smoke during a goblin attack. If you want to add another chapter to your document, another round of revisions, or another meeting, we can do that, using the same method from before to come to a total cost and agree on a new due date.

*In a restricted clause, would it be better to use that or which? Either work. Restricted clauses are subordinate clauses that include information which is necessary to understand that sentence. I just used two: "that include information", and "which is necessary to understand that sentence". If either clause were removed, it would change the meaning of the sentence. The rule** for restricted clauses is that they should be started with 'that', and unrestricted clauses should be started with 'which', except "when custom, euphony, or convenience" make 'which' better. I used 'which' in the second clause because it sounded better than using 'that' again.
**In English, rules are rather more like guidelines. This is partially because language is constantly changing (for an example, see how 'you' replaced 'thou' as a second-person singular pronoun, and how 'they' is becoming a third-person singular pronoun), and partially because it's a witch's brew of other languages hastily boiled into something really tasty.
